September 19, 2019 Dear Mr. Stott, |
For more than a century, the American Legion has been a voice for veterans and a place for veterans to find services, advocates, fellowship, and opportunities for engaging in their local communities. Chartered by Congress, the American Legion has created a benchmark and standard for veterans’ organizations around the nation. However, millions of veterans were excluded from this organization because their wartime service was unrecognized by Congress.
Thanks to actions taken by Congress and President Trump, roughly 6 million more American veterans will have access to American Legion programs and benefits. On July 30, 2019, President Trump signed into law the Let Everyone Get Involved in Opportunities for National Service Act, also known as the LEGION Act. This bill amends eligibility requirements from several limited war eras to two expansive timeframes: April 6, 1917 through November 11, 1918, and December 7, 1941 onward.
Serving our veterans is one of my priorities. I cosponsored the House version of this bill and am thrilled to see it become law. The way we treat our veterans – no matter their age, and regardless of the war in which they fought – sends a message to our children.
As we marked 18 years since the 9/11 attacks last week, we are reminded that in today’s world freedom comes cloaked in uncertainty. America relies on her sons and daughters to defend her liberty. We owe our military a debt we can never repay.
I am committed to continuing to work to improve service quality and efficiency for our veterans. If I or my staff can be of assistance in navigating VA bureaucracy or cutting through government red tape, please do not hesitate to contact us at 352-241-9220.
